Magicmirror™ Makes Shopping a Memorable Experience


Shopping in boutiques or in department stores promises to be even more interactive, thanks to Avery Dennison.

magicmirrorAs the market leader in brand identification solutions, Avery Dennisonis now offering customers its innovative magicmirror™, an interactive sales tool that provides brand new opportunities in the communication between consumer and retailer. This mirror-on-the-wall is a joint development of experience design specialist, “thebigspace” (Milan/London), and Avery Dennison Corporation, a recognized world leader in the area of RFID technology.


RFID-based technology makes information and interaction possible

Magicmirror™ uses radio-frequency-based technology to display data and images designed to provide the customer with additional sales information. For example, the customer can be informed about the country of origin or the quality of the fabric. He can also be  notified about available sizes and colors. Equally important, the customer is able to contact sales floor personnel simply by touching the mirror and, for instance, requesting a smaller or larger size.

The mirror also acts as an effective sales and marketing tool, given appropriate programming. Audio and visual displays suggest to the customer which other current clothing and accessories might be combined with the article just tried on. With additional information about brand ethos and the manufacturer of the merchandise, stores can exert positive influence on the consumer’s decision to buy.


rfidThe technology behind Magicmirror

From a technical standpoint, magicmirror™ combines a specially prepared mirror with digital information technology. When a customer enters a fitting room with an article of clothing that carries an RFID tag, the RFID scanner (key word) integrated in the mirror reads the information from the tag and displays it on the mirror’s surface. As he tries on the clothing the customer looks into the mirror and sees the displayed information.

Interactive functionality

Up to this point, sales personnel have not been involved in the process since the mirror automatically recognizes the RFID messages. Customers only use the interactive functionality of the mirror if they require assistance, or if they want to try on other sizes without leaving the changing room area. Should the customer use this function, the desired product and requested sizes are then displayed on a small handheld device carried by sales personnel. It is now up to sales floor personnel to respond by complying with the request, expressing their regret or offering personal consultation. In any case, the clerk sends a signal to the mirror in response to the customer’s request.

Magicmirror™ is not a, futuristic fantasy but is already available and can be ordered today. In addition to the demonstration version on display at the Metro Innovation Center there are installed applications in London and New York.
